"I was at a friend's birthday party and Martin was on a stag do," Keren "We were both up for a laugh and arranged to meet up the following weekend. There was something very attractive about him. He was a big strong guy and he made me feel protected."But Keren lived in Staffordshire and security worker Martin lived more than 100 miles away in Swindon, and the pressure of conducting a long distance romance took its toll.They got engaged in 2002 and their daughter Katie was born in 2003, but Martin still refused to move in with his family. "It was very hurtful because I loved him and I was ready to make that commitment," says Keren, a financial administrator.In August 2006, while on a work trip to Spain, she decided to end the relationship. "It was all or nothing and he wasn't going to give me his all, so I decided I wanted nothing," she says.At first Martin accepted her decision, but just days later his behaviour became highly disturbing. "It started with desperate text messages begging me to take him back," she says. "Three or four messages a day escalated to three or four an hour, plus calls. Soon he started saying if he couldn't be with me, he didn't want to see Katie. That upset me but it was nothing compared with what was to come."Meantime Keren started dating, and when Martin called the house one night and discovered another man was there, he lost control.
"The messages suddenly switched from begging me to take him back to calling me every name under the sun," says Keren. "He became aggressive and I was worried, so I called the police."Subsequently Martin was given a police caution, but over the coming months his actions became even more sinister.
